Stop Command
The "Stop" is used when the dog receives the spray. Without the device, it will become a warning. In this case, the dog will know that if he doesn't comply immediately, the collar will be put back on. Just as the "Good dog", the "Stop" command identifies the exact moment of misbehaviour. Eventually, he will cease his barking when you say "Stop", even without the training collar.
At exactly the same moment that your dog starts barking and receives the spray, say "Stop" in a firm, calm voice. Each barking must be associated with the "Stop" command and the spray.
If he responds to your command say "Good dog", followed by a reward of your choice (food, play, affection).
Repeat this exercise several times and increase time gradually before rewarding. A couple of seconds may be added at each cycle before offering a reward.
After a few days it's time to remove the device in order to see what your dog has learned if he continues to bark, you'll have to put back the device.
As soon as your dog is able to wait for quite some time, decrease the use of rewards! Offer a reward every second time, then every third time and so on, until rewards become optional. From now on, only sporadically reinforce correct behaviour, i.e. no barking, with special rewards. These will help you keep up your dog's motivation to be silent.
Conclusion
You want to firmly establish the following association: "If I bark when master says, "Stop", I'll have to wear the collar"!
Try to determine the cause or causes of excessive barking, then choose the therapeutic approach most appropriate for your dog. The procedures suggested by MULTIVET do not represent a complete dog behaviour modification program. Each case will always present subtle variations which may request additional steps or modifications.
